Allergy Awareness

As of September 2026, all staff have taken the most up-to-date training with East Sussex to ensure that we are compliant and allergy aware.  We have a new allergy policy aligned with Benedict's Law.

It is essential that children have medication in school that is in date please.  For the obvious safety reasons, those who do not have the correct medication will not be able to stay in school.
At Easebourne,  we understand that a food allergy is not a dietary preference—it is a serious medical condition. On average, most school classes in the UK contain one or two children living with a food allergy.

We do not believe in sweeping, unenforceable "blanket bans" on specific foods, as this can create a false sense of security. Instead, we implement a rigorous, whole-school allergy awareness culture where staff, students, and parents work together to dramatically reduce risk and ensure no child feels isolated or left out.

Parent Action Checklist

If your child has a diagnosed allergy, please ensure the following four steps are completed before their first day of term:

1.Submit Medical Forms:
Prerequisite.

Complete our Medical Conditions Form and provide an official letter or diagnosis from your child's allergy specialist or GP.

2.Co-create the Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP):
Before term starts.

Our Designated Allergy Lead will arrange a short meeting with you to build your child's unique IHP, outlining specific triggers, mild symptoms, and an emergency response plan.

3.Provide In-Date Medication:
Day One.

Deliver two in-date Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (AAIs) (such as EpiPen or Jext), alongside any required antihistamines, to the school office. These must be in their original packaging with the pharmacy prescription label intact.

4.Register with the School Caterer:
Week One.

Log into our school meal portal to register your child's specific dietary profile. Our catering team cannot serve food to an allergic child until this step is verified.

How We Manage Risk Daily

  • Allergen Tracking: Our catering team uses an live allergen charting system. Daily menus clearly label the 14 core allergens.

  • No Food Sharing: Children are explicitly taught from Reception onwards that we never share lunches, snacks, or treats.

  • Handwashing Culture: All students are required to wash their hands with soap and water before eating to eliminate cross-contamination. (Note: Hand sanitizer kills germs but does not remove food proteins)

Birthdays & Celebrations

To ensure every child can safely participate, we ask that parents speak to the class teacher to ensure that no allergies are overlooked and everyone is included.  Please DO NOT bring in home made goods. We would prefer that no food is brought in.  We celebrate with special privileges (e.g., wearing their own clothes, being the class helper, extra playtime, or selecting a book for storytime).
School Trips & Wraparound Care

Every school trip, cooking class, and extracurricular club undergoes a mandatory, written risk assessment that specifically accounts for student allergies. Staff carry emergency medication packs directly alongside the students during off-site trips.
Emergency Readiness & Medical Protocol

Seconds count during an allergic emergency. We ensure our environment is fully equipped to act immediately:

Accessible Medication: Student AAIs are never locked away. They are kept in designated, clearly labeled, unlocked medical storage units within the child’s learning zone, known to all supervising staff.

Staff Training: 100% of our teaching, support, administrative, and lunchtime staff undergo annual, certified training to recognize the early signs of anaphylaxis and safely administer an auto-injector.

Emergency Backups: In accordance with Department for Education guidance, our school maintains a supply of unprescribed, spare emergency AAIs on-site. These can be deployed if a child's personal device fails or gridlocks in an emergency.
