PE

Curriculum Intent

At Easebourne CE Primary School, we believe that PE/Sport and the physical being is unique and therefore the physical representation of the human spirit is vital in allowing both children and adults alike, from all influences, to express themselves in how they feel, sense and portray all of the time. Therefore we promise to

  • Ensure that each child has a positive sense of physical identify and personal wellbeing

  • Ensure that each child has a strong sense of physical skilfulness and accomplishment

  • Every child enjoys exploring moving and being physically active

  • High levels of dedication, desire to learn and make progress in PE (and other subject areas).

Core Principles

  • Holistic Development: Our PE curriculum supports children in developing the growth and refinement of gross motor skills, fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination and the overall health and wellbeing of children.

  • High Expectations: We encourage pupils to make progress in their physical, social and mental development which in turn supports them in maintaining a positive physical and mental outlook for the future. We want children to be the best they can be and not set limits to what their ambitions are.

  • Lifelong Learning: ‘Intelligence and skills can only function at the at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong’ John F. Kennedy. We believe, through experiences and a broad balanced and progressive curriculum tailored to all children, they will continue to have the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for their engagement in physical activity, sport and PE.

  • Community and Collaboration: We work with Midhurst Rother College to provide opportunities with other local schools in which the children can compete both in a challenging performance and a friendly, social experience so that they learn how to be sportsman/women. Parental engagement, particularly with clubs has been instrumental in engaging with events outside of the school day too. Specialist provision is also provided for CPD and to ensure that there is a consistent and high level of teaching from EYFS to Year 6. Children work collaboratively in lessons in an environment where they can constructively express their thoughts and share vocabulary appropriate to sport.

Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to develop pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills in a progressive and coherent way. New knowledge and skills build upon prior learning through structured revisiting of content.

 Curriculum Implementation

Our PE curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and aims to provide children with knowledge and skills across a broad range of sports. Class teachers and external coaches (Aspire) are supported in their delivery through the use of the scheme ‘PE Hub’. Our experienced staff use this as a base for their teaching adapting as necessary for their cohort.

Our curriculum is inclusive, progressive and emphasis is placed on a whole child approach, where every child can achieve and develop. The structure of the lessons promotes knowledge and competency in motor competence, rules, strategies and tactics in healthy participation.

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in physical education lessons such as a mixture of whole-class teaching and individual/ group activities. Teachers/ external coaches model sporting skills then provide pupils with opportunities for them to practise their newly learnt skills. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children and we encourage children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of other children.

Curriculum coherence allows knowledge, skills and vocabulary to be introduced and revisited throughout other blocks of learning. The knowledge, skills and vocabulary increase as they are revisited ensuring clear progression as the children move through the school. The scheme is very detailed and is user friendly.

Lessons develop physical and mental capabilities that allow children to self-reflect, motivate and challenge themselves. We teach lessons that children:

  • Have the opportunity to participate in PE at their own level of development

  • Have fun and experience success in a variety of sports

  • Secure and build on a range of knowledge

  • Develop good sporting attitudes

  • Understand basic rules

  • Learn in a safe environment

  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
